Consult your healthcare practitioner before use if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, abnormal heart rhythm, unexplained swelling, poorly controlled blood pressure or a history of electrolyte imbalance.
Glycyrrhizin-containing Licorice can contribute to sodium and water retention, potassium loss, increased blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm, particularly with high exposure, prolonged use or susceptible health conditions.
Do not use Licorice High Grade with transplant antirejection medicines such as cyclosporin, tacrolimus, sirolimus or everolimus unless the treating transplant specialist explicitly approves it. Current MediHerb interaction guidance classifies the combination as contraindicated because Licorice may reduce medicine effectiveness and increase rejection risk.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining it with blood-pressure medicines.
Licorice may oppose the intended effect of antihypertensive treatment and requires blood-pressure and electrolyte monitoring where a practitioner determines that use is appropriate.
Consult your healthcare practitioner before use with loop or thiazide diuretics, digoxin or another cardiac glycoside, corticosteroids, stimulant laxatives or other medicines that may lower potassium.
Combining these medicines with glycyrrhizin-containing Licorice may increase the risk of hypokalaemia, fluid retention or cardiac effects.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before use with lithium, midazolam, omeprazole, hormonal contraceptives, prolactin-modifying medicines or drugs mainly metabolised through CYP3A4.
Some concerns are based on limited or theoretical evidence, but the high glycyrrhizin concentration makes professional medicine review appropriate.
Do not attempt to offset Licorice-related potassium loss simply by taking a potassium supplement or deliberately increasing potassium intake.
Potassium supplementation can itself be unsafe with kidney disease and certain heart or blood-pressure medicines. Potassium status should be assessed and managed professionally.
Do not combine several Licorice-containing products.
Total exposure may include liquid extracts, herbal teas, throat products, practitioner formulas and confectionery containing real Licorice.
Stop use and seek medical advice for swelling of the legs, ankles, hands or face, rapid unexplained weight gain, muscle weakness, marked fatigue, severe muscle cramps, constipation, palpitations, skipped heartbeats, severe headache or a significant increase in blood pressure.
Low potassium may cause weakness, fatigue, muscle cramps and abnormal heart rhythm.
Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, marked weakness or a sustained irregular heartbeat.
Do not use this product as a substitute for prescribed respiratory, digestive, cardiac, kidney, blood-pressure or hormonal treatment.
Seek medical advice for a cough that persists, worsens or occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, fever, blood or thick discoloured mucus.
Seek medical advice for persistent indigestion, recurring abdominal pain, swallowing difficulty, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, blood in vomit or stool, or black stools.
Do not use Licorice High Grade to self-treat urinary burning, blood in the urine, fever or suspected urinary infection.
Do not use for prolonged periods. The duration should be selected and reviewed by the prescribing practitioner.
Discontinue use at least seven days before general anaesthesia, surgery or an invasive procedure unless otherwise directed by your treating healthcare professional.
